Case Binding Specialist

Location: Berkeley, California
Pay Range: $28-35/hr
Full-Time, Onsite

We are actively seeking a Case Binding Specialist to join a specialty bookbinding company known for detailed craftsmanship and premium-quality finished products. In this skilled production role, you will create and restore hardcover books, work with leather and specialty materials, produce decorative finishes, and build custom turned-edge boxes.

What You’ll Do

• Build and finish hardcover books by completing case construction, casing-in, gluing, pressing, spine work, endpaper application, and precise alignment.
• Measure, cut, wrap, and apply leather, book cloth, paper, board, adhesives, and other specialty components with exceptional control.
• Produce decorative paper finishes, including etch painting, according to approved samples and individual job requirements.
• Set up and execute foil stamping, embossing, and debossing on paper, leather, covers, and other suitable materials.
• Create polished turned-edge boxes by accurately forming boards, wrapping surfaces, shaping corners, and completing interior and exterior finishes.
• Restore damaged books by repairing or replacing covers, hinges, spines, endpapers, and related binding elements.
• Interpret job tickets, specifications, work instructions, and samples before organizing the materials and tools needed for production.
• Examine materials and finished work for size, registration, placement, adhesion, alignment, appearance, and overall consistency.
• Record production quantities and job information accurately, then prepare completed work for its next operation or shipment.
• Support an efficient production floor by maintaining an orderly workspace, protecting specialty materials, following PPE and equipment requirements, and promptly reporting safety or quality concerns. [Case Bindi...UBBED.docx | Word]

To Be Successful in This Role, You’ll Bring:

• Direct hands-on experience in case binding, hardcover book production, or a closely related specialty bindery environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of hardcover construction, adhesives, leather, book cloth, and precision finishing methods.
• Required practical experience with etch painting on paper, foil dies and stamping, embossing, debossing, turned-edge box construction, and book repair.
• The ability to interpret production tickets, written instructions, measurements, specifications, and approved samples with minimal oversight.
• Strong basic math and measuring skills, along with the patience and dexterity needed for detailed, repetitive handwork.
• A consistent, quality-minded working style and the ability to recognize defects before work advances to the next stage.
• Dependable attendance, punctuality, collaborative communication, and flexibility to work overtime or adjusted schedules when production demands require it.

Physical and Workplace Requirements

• You must be able to stand and walk for extended periods while regularly performing detailed hand and arm movements.
• The position involves reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and regularly lifting or carrying materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Work is performed in an active printing and bindery setting that may include paper dust, adhesives, inks, cleaning products, production noise, changing temperatures, and moving machinery.
• Essential duties must be completed with or without reasonable accommodation, using assistance or appropriate equipment for heavier items.
